Blogging for LGBT Families

I'm in the middle of a very busy day at work, which won't end until well into the evening. I've got a short break here, and I'll use it to reflect on my family.

I feel blessed to have a tight, loving relationship with my children and my birth-family. I look forward to making those bonds even more genuine this summer.

I also feel wonderful to have an extended chosen-family full of support and love. In a world sometimes strained by misunderstanding, creating a chosen-family can be essential.

What does the word "family" mean to you?

"Family is the people who when you have to go there, they have to let you in." This is a pithy way of saying that family is the people I'm stuck with, but in a benevolent fashion. This does NOT include some of my blood family, and it does include some people I'm not related to in any way except by my choosing.

My chosen family includes my mother, but does not include all of my siblings. It includes [info]wild_irises, whom I met through my partner just a few years ago, and my friend A, whom I met when I was 14 and called "my foster sister" growing up.

My chosen family rocks.
